Tiled Home with Dogs Painting

Tiled Home with Dogs Painting

Over the summer I had the pleasure of working with a customer who commissioned me to create a painting of the interior of a beautiful home in Bologna.

The reference image showed a beautiful tiled corridor, with artwork and full shelves! In the corner a sleeping dog sets the tone of the cosy home space.

I was asked to include a second dog that wasn’t in the original reference photo! For that process I took the secondary reference photo and using photoshop to include the dog into the original reference photo.

The process here included isolating the pooch and colourgrading him so that he matched the environment he was in - making sure he was lit / shaded in a way that made sense for the scene.

Once I had completed the work on tweaking the reference photo to work from, I got started with creating the underdrawing for the painting.

The amount of objects in the scene meant that there was so much to capture! It was exciting and sometimes overwhelming but I was able to focus and enjoy the process of never ending detail to get stuck into.

For this commission I was able to complete it in 3 weeks, the minimum timeframe that I allow for commission orders. It was a bit touch and go since it was a rather complex piece though!

My favourite part of the painting was the perspective in the tiled flooring, hence naming the piece “Tiled Home with Dogs”.

The warmth and arrangement of objects in the space tell a narrative of a lived-in home that captures a quiet harmony - focusing on what is usually the backdrop to people’s lives.
