Corgi Commission
Share
Recently I was commissioned to paint a cute corgi.
The reference photo was of a dog called Henry taken in 1979!

It was a lovely experience because the photo had some lovely colour grading, and the pattern of the old-school carpet was mesmerising!
Due to the painting being less complex than others I work on, I aimed to get it to the customer in time for his wife’s birthday, though that was a couple of days short of the 3-week minimum.

In other cases I would simply not think it possible, as I usually have more markets / work already in place that don’t allow me to suddenly dedicate all my focus on one painting.
However, since this piece had less going on and I luckily had some extra time on my hands that month, I put my head down and got to it.

I was so pleased with the colour-test sketch I did in gouache.
This is something I do before all my commissions to make sure that I can see what I should / shouldn’t do colour-wise for the real deal.

Henry was the hardest part of the scene, as I wanted to capture his cute yet timid expression as best as possible.
I feel I managed to nail it and was so pleased with the outcome!
